Lately announced on this site - now it is here, the new album „Moods“ of Michaela Rabitsch and Robert Pawlik who’s duo has changed to a quartet – with good success, because bassplayer Karl Sayer and drummer Joris Dudli fit into the concept seamlessly. With pleasure you can register, that it is still possible to play excellent new jazz, effortless and animated. The international formed mix – no world music, notabene! , but pure modern jazz with European, American and Latin elements - this time is composed by Pawlik and Rabitsch each and all. The splendid stile, with which Rabitsch plays trumpet and flugelhorn and Pawliks elegant play are guarantors.

Two tracks are taken from the former album „Just the two of us“, and with „Moon in the Dark“, which now is more than half a minute longer and has some bite more it is difficult to prefer a version – both have their charm. With „Tren Numero Uno“ it is easier. Here the new version had been immediately my favorite (not only because of the duration of the song – more than two times longer): with drive and a more powerful tempo – a classical hard bop tune.

The interplay of trumpet/ flugelhorn and guitar is still as unusual as delicate and like already on their former album Rabitsch and Pawlik convince, that this combination can portray most pleasantly.
In addition there is Michaela Rabitschs pleasing voice, which exactly has that certain indefinable something, which I already praised high previously, and I repeat it here gladly. She communicates the cosy atmosphere of a dignified Jazz-Club – and you have to say: a good one, because another one couldn’t effort a great guitarist like Robert Pawlik. Don’t forget the sidemen, which are more than rhythmic addition: Karl Sayer, who is dignified featured in „The End“ and „Moods“ and Joris Dudli, who throughout brings in that just mentioned drive, a good backbone for the outstanding quartet.
Albert Kreuzer on electric bass in „Afrika“ and „Put it in the Pocket“ also leaves a good imression.

Just half a year or one year passed between the recordings of „Just the two of us“ and „Moods“, but you can hear clearly a progression. „Tren Numero Uno“ and „Dance“ are really showpieces. Michaela Rabitsch and Robert Pawlik had been extraordinary and good as a duo, as Michaela Rabitsch & Robert Pawlik Quartet they are extraordinary good.
A Jazz-Club you can get home. The second album actually has a rougher ride – not in this case.

Ten years of partnership and common musical creating: under such circumstances you get to know the other closely, with all his stregths and weaknesses, know how to support the other, know, when you can lean on.
A situation which can be fulfilling as well as burdening. Obviously there are two possibilities: totally (on stage with the same band) or on stage with different bands.
With Michaela Rabitsch and her partner Robert Pawlik the first case works excellent. The singer and trumpeter studied at Bruckner Conservatory and performed beside theater music at Burgtheater Vienna with Hypersax and different Big Bands.

Robert Pawlik studied at Conservatory of Vienna and focused in the last years - equally as his partner - on the duo and quartet with Michaela Rabitsch. They compose together in interaction. And it works. This CD is really flawlessly, groovy, swinging, and proofes, that Viennese charm and Jazz definitely combine.
The songs capture life situations, once with a twinkle in one's eyes, once with wanderlust as in Pawlik's "Afrika", which I want to recomend highly to every interested listener.

Michaela Rabitsch, jazztrumpetplayer, and Robert Pawlik, guitarist, play on their third album a soulful mix of jazz, latin and funk, which never seems overloaded or stressfull. „Moods“ leaves the music space for expansion and spreads a mood which hardly gives rise to misery.
