The Michaela Rabitsch and Robert Pawlik quartet have a unique sound for jazz quartet, especially for the fact that Rabitsch is a jazz singer and a trumpeter. In fact, she is the best female trumpeter in Austria. Having two musical talents when playing music gives you an advantage.

The CD "Moods" is their third album. Rabitsch and Pawlik have played together for 10 years now. They are international touring artists who have performed in Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, ..... and they scheduled to play China this autumn.

The song "Moon in the dark" is a good jazz ballad. The sound of jazz guitar kicks off the song. The singing style of Rabitsch fits this group's arrangements and the tone of the guitar accents her jazz trumpet playing. This is a very good sound for newer jazz music.

"Tren Numero Uno" is a faster tempo jazz tune with a full sound. When you listen to this one, it sounds like more instruments are present than really are. The jazz guitar solo is impressive and there is more guitar on this track than previous tunes. The work of the drummer fills in the gaps beautifully.

"Knozen Bein Mnozil" is jazz music played in a more traditional manner. You have Elvin Jones-style drums with brushes, jazz guitar similar to Barney Kessel and good bass playing also. This song has the classic jazz sound.

Overall, the Moods" CD by the Rabitsch and Pawlik quartet have their own sound for jazz and contemporary jazz music.

This Viennese combo is not your usual "she sings, he plays guitar" jazz couple.
For one thing, Rabitsch is an accomplished, fluid trumpeter, and several tracks are instrumentals ("Trén Número Uno," one of a few Latin-tinged tunes here). They're a true partnership, with some tunes by each leader and the rest co-written (everything's an original); they both produced and arranged, and each gets chances to shine ("Quartual Guitar Madness").
They try on a bunch of styles, mixing a modal theme with nightclub vocals on the title track, getting mildly funky on "Put It In The Pocket," slowing down for a ballad ("Moon In The Dark") and speeding up for a romp ("Dance").

Michaela provides vocals and sings through her trumpet as well. Robert plays guitar with Karl Sayer (b) and Juris Dudli (d) forming the core band. They composed all of the music, a set of pleasant Latin ballads and bouncy bossa nova tunes. "Afrika" includes an energizing percussion solo from Kornél Horváth.
There is a spirited bounce to "Put it in the Pocket" featuring Pawlik and the swinging "Dance".
It is a good set especially Michaela's seamless transitions back and forth on vocals and the trumpet.

One of the most original CD's to come out in 2008 .... I am always particularly happy to hear new compositions from today's artists, and Rabitsch and Pawlik bring fresh originals to this unique and satisfying recording. The band's performance are first-rate, as well.
